The Heartbreak Kid Review

The new Farrelly Brothers (they also did “There’s Something About Mary” (1998), “Me, Myself & Irene” (2000) and “Stuck On You” (2003)) film starring Ben Stiller, Michelle Monaghan, Jerry Stiller, Malin Akerman and Carlos Mencia tackles the issue of premature marriage.

Eddie Cantrow (Ben Stiller) is a forty-year old man who is yet to be married. He is starting to feel socially awkward about his marital status, and at the same time he’s seeing his ex-fiancee walking down the isle hits him straight in the face, so he needs to get serious. Fortunately for him suddenly out of the blue he meets this gorgeous girl Lila (Malin Akerman). Unfortunately for him, about six weeks into this courtship he finds out that her company wants to send her off to Europe to work, and she would not have to go if she were married. So Eddie puts 1 and 1 together, somehow comes up with 11 and decides to marry Lila, and honeymoon in Mexico. This is when he begins to meet this whole new person, it’s as if a switch was turned on and all the crazy began to ooze out of Lila.

This movie was okay as far as I was concerned. The Farrelly brothers i think are trying too hard to satisfy the audience with the same things they have already done. This movie feels so much like the Farrelly brothers took the “There’s Something About Mary” and added marriage and honeymoon to the equation and took out the stalking and dating part. The problem with that is that it doesn’t work. You are getting a lot of crude humour and a life lesson, never to jump into anything too quickly. The direction was as you expect it to be, average, because you hope for the content to be more than enough for you entertainment rather than any artistic value. So not much else I can really tell you about this one right now….

IMDB says 5.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes says 29%
I say 6.0/10
