Next Movie Review

Lee Tamahori directed this film (also did “xXx: State of the Union” (2005), and “Die Another Day” (2002)), and stars Nicholas Cage, Julianne Moore, Jessica Biel, and Peter Falk.

Cris ‘Frank Caddilac’ Johnson (Nicholas Cage) is a stage magician who has a special talent, he has the ability to see approximately two minutes into his own future. Agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore), is an FBI Agent who believes in Cris’ precognitive abilities and thinks it could help save the country from a nuclear terrorist attack. She tries to aqcuire his services while he tries to run away. The real movie starts when his love interest Elizabeth Cooper (Jessica Biel) is captured by the terrorists and he is trying to save her and in effect the day.

This movie is complete and utter bullshit (excuse my French). The movie’s action sequences are lame and too dumb, I like the concept of someone who can see in the future and therefore change what he does to comply and get away with everything, however the director did an awful job and so did the writer. Like the one and only sequences I liked were the ones where you just saw him doing things in real life in order for him to get away rather than the ones where the director tried to show you his thought process of seeing each variation of the future and then eventually how he would narrowly escapes entrapment. Because you see him barely slip between the cracks of security and you know he had to see it all and he’s planned it impromptu rather than seeing him fail, fail , fail, fail, ohh ye…. win. So ye… please do not watch this movie.

1408 Review

This film is directed by Mikael Håfström (also did “Derailed” (2005)), and stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson.

Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is the writer of a series of books which describes some of the scariest places in the world, or at least critiques them and takes away the illusion of these folklore about ghosts, goblins, etc. One day he hears about room 1408 of The Dolphin Hotel in New York, and its history. Many have entered the room, but none have lasted more than an hour. He therefore, takes his mature and real attitude and takes on this as his next chapter for his new book. Gerald Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), plays the manager of The Dolphin Hotel. Mr. Olin tries his best to discourage Mike from occupying the room for the night, but he eventually hands Mike the key and the crazy night begins.

I was looking forward to this movie for a long while, however it really disappointed me. If your looking to this movie for a bloody filled horror movie then you will hate it, if you think it will sum up to many other great movies based on Stephen King novels/short stories (like “Carrie” (1976), “The Shining” (1980), and “Christine” (1983)) then again your wishes will be denied. Alfred Hitchcock once said “there is nothing frightening about the bang, it’s what leads up the to bang”… I think that is true, and this movie tried to utilize that concept and failed terribly. The movie isn’t anything, it isn’t scary, funny, pretty, I can’t really say anything that good about this movie.

IMDB gives it 7.4/10
rottentomatoes gives it 77%
I give it a disappointing 4.0/10

Vacancy Review

This movie is directed by Nimród Antal, and stars Kate Beckinsale, Luke Wilson and Frank Whaley.

This is movie about a married couple who are on the brink of divorce who are driving home from a family event when their car breaks down and they have to spend the night in this cheap motel. David Fox (Luke Wilson) and Amy Fox (Kate Beckinsale) realise as the night moves on that they have checked in to a motel that the caretaker, Mason (Frank Whaley), doesn’t intend for them to check-out.

This movie is as expected not that good. Luke Wilson isn’t that good an actor and it seems that noone really wants to give him any good roles, same with Beckinsale. The movie’s premise is ridiculous and tries to fit in with those like “Saw” where people are put in a scenario where they have to survive and escape the clutches of death. But the movie just does nothing but suck for a little more than ninety minutes, I actually fell asleep watching it and finished it later just to prove how crappy the movie was.

IMDB says 6.5/10
rottentomatoes says 54%
I say 4.5/10

28 Weeks Later Review

This film was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and stars Catherine McCormack, Robert Carlyle, Jeremy Renner, Emily Beecham, Imogen Poots and Mackintosh Muggleton.

This movie is set in London, England six months after the breakout of the rage virus. All of the infected have died of starvation and survivors have been found and kept in a quarantined area in London. People have began to return to the country after fleeing the country. Donald Harris (Robert Carlyle) is reunited with his children, Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton). Donald informs his children of how their mother died. Tammy and Andy drift out of the quarantined zone to visit their London home and they find their mother, Alice Harris (Catherine McCormack), alive and not showing any side-effects of the virus. It shows that she has some form of an immunity to the virus, but she is at the same time carrying the virus, and causes the virus to be spread again. Outbreak in the quarantine zone. The movie follows Andy and Tammy and a group of individuals attempting to avoid the infected and being killed by the army trying to exterminate the virus again.

This movie is pretty good, especially for a sequel, but as usual does not match up to it predecessor. It has some great acting, some nice action sequences, and more high pumping zombie scenes. I like Jeremy Reener the US, Army sniper who helps the group escape and get around town. He really lifted the show for me. If you like “28 Days Later” or any of the George Romero zombie movies check this one out.
