Sunshine Review

Posted by gmanr26 on July 26, 2007

Sunshine is directed by Danny Boyle (also did “Trainspotting” (1996) and “28 Days Later” (2002)), and stars Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Chris Evans and Cillian Murphy.

This is a science-fiction story set it the future where the sun is dying out and a team of astronauts and scientists have set out on a mission to reignite the sun. This mission is the second of its kind, the last attempt was a failure and it has been seven years since the last attempt was a failure. The reason for the failure of the last mission and what happened to the crew is still unknown.

We enter the story at the tail-end of the mission. Icarus II (the ship) is going around Mercury and heading towards the sun where they have discovered the Icarus I (the ship from seven years ago). The crew make a judgement call and decide to attempt to salvage the ship and obtain a second ship in order to better their chances for successfully completing their mission. This is where everything starts to go wrong. The movie now becomes a thriller in which the question is will they all survive long enough to complete their mission?

The direction is great, as expected from Danny Boyle. The movie houses some brilliant special effects and interesting looking things (like the “Sun Astro-Suits” I call them). The acting in this movie is pretty good too, great performance from Cillian Murphy (his name is pronounce Kill – e – an btw) ( I loved him in “28 Days Later”, “Batman Begins” and “Red Eye”). Chris Evans is pretty okay even though he sucked so much in “Fantastic Four” and Michelle Yeoh is great as well. The story is pretty well put together, it isn’t as good a put together as the likes of “28 Days Later” though, but still a good movie. Definitely worth a ticket price (if you liked other Danny Boyle movies) or a rent (if your a first timer to his type of film).

IMDB gave it 7.3/10

I say 7.5/10

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix Review

Posted by gmanr26 on July 22, 2007

The movie is directed by David Yates, and stars Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe.

This is the fifth piece to the seven part story of Harry Potter and his life at Hogwarts. Lord Voldemort is out on the loose after being set free from the end of the last film. However, the Ministry of Magic denies all claims of the dark lord’s return to the world of witchcraft and wizardry, and is going to great lengths to discredit Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter’s claims of his return.  How will young Mr. Potter defend himself from the dark lord while feeling isolated from the world, while he is being slandered by the world of magic?

The movie is highly entertaining and has Gary Oldman is in … so you know it’s gonna be great. Even though the first two movies in the series were all kiddy and boring (even though this really is a child’s book), the movies since then have all been more dark and more enjoyable. I think I’m willing to say that this is the most enjoyable and action packed of all the Harry Potter movies so far. So if you enjoy the books, or just the movies, or you just like a good fantasy movie…. go check it out.

IMDB says 7.8/10

I say 8.3/10

Transformers Review

Posted by gmanr26 on July 15, 2007

OK… as usual first some stats…. movie is directed by Michael Bay (also did “Pearl Harbor” (2001) and “The Rock” (1996)), and stars Tyrese Gibson, Josh Dunhamel, John Voight, Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf; with numerous cameo appearances which include: Anthony Anderson, Bernie Mac, John Tuturro, and Peter Cullen doing the voice of Optimus Prime again (he was the original voice from the 80’s cartoon).

Our story starts off in the deserts where an US military base is attacked by an unknown advanced piece of technology. The attack has the entire US government and military in a daze as to what the objective was and who conducted the attack. However, at the same time we meet a young high schooler, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), who is being taken by his father to buy his first car. After an interesting negotiation he lands a decent ride and off he goes. However, “little did he know” that he didn’t choose to buy this car, the car chose him. This car would be his guardian… AKA Bumble-Bee one of the autobots. The movie then thrusts you into the rollercoaster of a story that the transformers is and takes you through it in true Michael Bay form….

This movie was great. The movie had everything it needed, action, comedy, and half decent acting from Shia LaBeouf, who I expect to keep getting better with his acting (glad he’s now out of the Disney stuff and doing some real movies). The story was half decent and the movie had a lot of great graphics and tons of action, the theatre went crazy everytime one of the Decepticons and Autobots transformed, and even more when Optimus Prime appeared for the first time. The only complaint I can really say about the transforming bit is that it was kinda stupid to show the whole 5-10 min CG transformation nearly everytime the autobots and other robots transformed…. like it’s cool the first time but get on with it man… I don’t need it everytime. I’m sure this movie will be one of (if not the) top grossing film for the summer, and will be a crowd pleaser for all the fans of the series back in the day and even make some new fans today.

IMDB gives it 8.0/10

I give it a 8.8/10

Invincible Review

Posted by gmanr26 on July 12, 2007

I saw this movie yesterday on STARZ, and I love Wahlberg so I decided to sit down and give it a try.

First some stats…

This film was released in 2006 and was directed by Ericson Core (this is his directorial debut for the big screen).  It stars Elizabeth Banks, Greg Kinnear,  and Mark Wahlberg.

This movie is based on a true story about a Philadelphia local, Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg), who is a huge football fan, and without question the best player in his local friendly games.   Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) is named the new coach of a failing Philadelphia Eagles team.  Dick then decides to announce a huge move for the club, which today would get most coaches beheaded.  Dick announces that the club will hold open tryouts at the Eagles stadium in the coming weekend.  Papale and his friends hears this at the bar where he works part-time and pesters him about trying out.  After a lot of convincing he shows up to the tryouts.  All is said and done, the day is over and he is leaving the stadium…. Mr. Vermeil appears at his car and introduces himself, and offers him a chance to come to training camp.  This is the beginning of a legend (for all of those who know the real story).

This movie is really good.   The movie keeps true to the story and feels very real.  The acting is solid,  Greg Kinnear I’ve liked since “As Good As It Gets” (1997), Elizabeth Banks I’ve seen in Scrubs and other movies, and Mark Wahlberg been a big fan of since recent, especially with “The Departed” (2006).  The directing isn’t anything to be Oscar winning but it gets the story told and the job done.  The story is what really drives this film, the story is really hear-filled, and I always love a movie surrounding sports, even some bad ones.  If you got two hours to burn check this film out, give it a rent or watch on your cable if you can.

IMDB gives it 7.1/10

I give it a solid 8.0/10
